On the 14th February millions of people around the world will buy or receive Chocolates As A Valentines Gift. It is a tradition as well established now as buying chocolate for Easter. Or giving out candy at Halloween. But how did it come to be?

The Feast of Saint Valentine, or Valentine’s Day as it is more commonly known, is an annual holiday that is celebrated in many countries around the world. Now the second biggest gift giving holiday in the calendar year St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration to at least one, and possibly more, early Christian saints named Valentinus.

Valentine’s Day was first associated with romantic love during the 14th century. When the following text appeared in Geoffery Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules which was written in 1382.

‘For this was on seynt Volantynys day, Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make’.

By the time the 18th century rolled around the tradition of expressing your love for someone by presenting them with a gift of flowers, confectionery and sending greeting cards had come to be widely adopted.

Chocolates As A Valentines Gift

This year some $791.4 million is expected to be spent in Australia on gifts for Valentine’s Day. With the best part of a whopping $91 million of that being dished out on chocolates.

The modern act of giving a box of chocolate as a gift for Valentine’s Day can be traced back to Richard Cadbury of Cadbury Chocolate fame. He in 1861 created the first ever heart-shaped box of chocolates for sale to the general public, in the run up to Valentine’s Day.

But why do we continue to give chocolate when other gifts like lingerie, jewellery, flowers, aftershaves/perfumes and technological items like Smart phones and iPads have also become popular items?

Well perhaps the answer lies in the perception that it is an appropriate gift.

For many people giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day is a safe bet. Because pretty much everyone has a sweet tooth. It is also well known that women love the taste of chocolate and also the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

Furthermore through clever and targeted advertising chocolate continues to be equated with affection and attraction. As well as passion, sensuality and in the case of the Milky Tray Man too, a sense of mystery.

A third reason to give it is that chocolate is believed to be an aphrodisiac. Though this is not strictly true. While some people buy luxury brands in an attempt to treat the object of their desire with something they wouldn’t ordinarily have every day.

Perhaps the best reason to buy chocolate for your loved one on Valentine’s Day is the emotional effect it will have on them.

Studies have shown that chocolate has a huge psychological and emotional effect on people to the good.
