So what exactly is Gluten Free Confectionery?
Ten years ago I’m not sure I had even heard the phrase Gluten Free Confectionery. Let alone the condition of Coeliac Disease. But nowadays it seems to be a major buzzword in the confectionery industry.
In Australia 1 in every 100 people are diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. (We all know someone – just think of your family and friends). An therefore requires their chocolates and lollies to be gluten free.
But what exactly is Coeliac Disease? And more importantly what exactly is a gluten free lolly?
The answer is actually quite simple really.
Coeliac Disease is a permanent autoimmune disorder that is caused by a total dietary intolerance to gluten. A protein found in cereal grains such as wheat, rye, barley and oats. The presence of gluten in their food coerces their body to make antibodies. Which end up damaging the lining of the small bowel.
As a result this makes it virtually impossible for the bowel to do its usual job of absorbing the essential nutrients we require from the foods we eat. The symptoms of such a condition, which can be really painful, range from anaemia, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting and crippling stomach pains.
It is not a very nice condition to have.
Like with many things in life precaution and prevention is the best way to deal with a gluten intolerance. So those with Coeliac Disease are strongly advised (and quickly learn through painful experience) to avoid any food with gluten in it.
In Australia sufferers do get some help. By law all food labels must clearly advise of the presence of even the tiniest amounts of gluten in any item of food. But it does pay to averse yourself fully of all the ingredients in anything you eat.
Availability Of Gluten Free Confectionery
It may surprise you to learn that Coeliac Disease is very common.
Infact there are twice as many people in Australia living with Coeliac Disease as there are those with Breast Cancer or Type 1 Diabetes.
It is perhaps for this reason that so many gluten free confections are now available to buy now. That is chocolates, lollies and confectionery that are labelled as gluten free, or products that are gluten free by ingredient.
Perhaps the most famous and popular gluten free product in the world is the Jelly Beans made by Jelly Bellys. With over 15000 tonnes of the stuff made every year you can say there a big demand for it.
But in Australia others proudly make Gluten Free Confectionery for those with Coeliac Disease. Some of the more notable ones include lollies by Chunky Funkeez, Dragon Sweets and Jolly Lolly. Also fudge by Grans Fudge.
There is one company though that declines to make a specific Gluten Free disclaimer on their products.
Instead Cadbury Australia choose to provide the buyer with all the info they need upon which to make their own decision. A reluctance that comes as a surprise to many and a source of frustration to some.
Whilst there is no ‘cure’ for Coeliac Disease, the need for Gluten Free Confectionery will always be here.
So the sooner we as an industry tune in to this demand, the sooner people with gluten intolerances can enjoy their sweet treats.
Without the fear of pain.
