50 Flavours of Jelly Belly
It has been a meteoric rise. But in just under 40 years The Jelly Belly Candy Company has grown from the humble beginnings of selling just 8 flavours in an ice cream parlour (called ‘Fosselman’s’) in Alhambra, California, to become one of the world’s most loved brands of confectionery. With some 50 Flavours of Jelly Belly in their ‘official’ list and also some 100 flavours overall.
A 5th generation family owned company that was founded by two brothers in 1868 under the name Goelitz Confectionery, The Jelly Belly Candy Company now employ over 800 people. It also has an annual turnover of some $190 million.
Based at One Jelly Belly Lane in Fairfield, California, Jelly Belly also has a second facility in North Chicago, Illinois. As well also as a distribution centre in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.
In addition they also have a 50,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand. Which serves the international market. Together they churn out over 2,000,000 jelly beans every hour. Which equates to some 16 billion individual Jelly Belly jelly beans every year.
Created by David Klein who came up with the marketing concept of a new kind of jelly bean to be sold in single flavours, the name Jelly Belly is alleged to have been inspired by the 1920s blues singer, Leadbelly.
The first Jelly Beans to also come with a menu of flavours. They were also the first jelly bean to be flavoured throughout. Other brands had no taste in the centre.
All Jelly Bellys are free from wheat, gluten, dairy and also nuts. They are also suitable for vegetarians because they contain no gelatine.
They also contain less than 4 calories each. As well as no fat too. In addition this confection is certified OU/OUD Kosher.
As a general rule Jelly Belly uses natural flavours whenever possible. Which includes, for instance, fruit purees in the Raspberry. As well as Blueberry. And also Peach flavours too.
The original 8 flavours of Jelly Bellys were Very Cherry, Root Beer, Cream Soda and Tangerine. Also Green Apple, Lemon, Liquorice and Grape too.
However nowadays the company showcases 50 Flavours of Jelly Belly. Which they label as ‘official’. Along with a number of ‘rookie’ flavours. Which they trial each year and grant official status too if they prove to be more successful in terms of sales than the least popular flavour in that current range.

FACTS ABOUT JELLY BELLY
The most famous flavour is possibly the Blueberry flavour. Which was made as a tribute to Ronald Reagan when he was inaugurated US President in 1981.
Infact Ronald Reagan was arguably Jelly Bellys most famous fan. He always kept a jar of them on his desk in the White House and also on Air Force One too.
He also sent them on the 1983 flight of the space shuttle Challenger with Sally Ride. Who was also the first American woman astronaut to fly in to space. Making them in turn the first jelly beans in outer space. Which is a pretty cool claim to fame!
Each individual Jelly Belly Jelly Bean is embossed with the Jelly Belly logo to ensure of the authenticity of the product. Remarkably it can take up to 21 days to create a single bean.
To get the best from Jelly Belly jelly beans you should eat one at a time. This will allow you to savour the flavour of each one and fully appreciate the intensity of its taste.
That said Jelly Bellys can be mixed to create fantastic flavour recipes. Such as Sweet Fried Banana (1 Top Banana, 1 Cinnamon and 1 Buttered Popcorn) or also Tamarind (2 Chili Mango, 1 Sizzling Cinnamon, 1 Dr Pepper).
