Top 10 Most Popular Jelly Belly Flavours in Australia
I received a rather unexpected but very welcome message the other day from David Klein in response to the article I posted on our blog The Top 10 Uses for a Jelly Belly.
In case you don’t recognise the name David Klein is a bit of a legend. The subject of the 2010 documentary Candyman: The David Klein Story, his is one of the greatest confectionery success stories in history. In 1976 with his last $800 he decided to pursue his idea of selling Jelly Beans in individual flavours.
After appointing the Herman Goelitz Candy Company as his only contract manufacturer he asked them to produce mini Jelly Beans that used real fruit juices and natural flavours where possible to boost the taste sensation. And so The Jelly Belly Candy Company was born.
The rest as they say is history.
Helped by the endorsement of its most famous fan, Ronald Reagan, who always kept a jar of them on his desk in the White House and at Air Force One (I wonder if he had to pay for them?), Jelly Bellys are now one of the most popular confections in the world.
Operating out of nearly 800,000 square feet of production facilities in Chicago and Wisconsin the company makes more than 34 million pounds of the product annually.
Initially eight Jelly Belly Flavours were sold in an ice cream parlour called Fosselman’s in Alhambra, California, namely Very Cherry, Tangerine, Lemon, Green Apple, Grape Jelly, Licorice, A&W Root Beer, and A&W Cream Soda. Today however there over 100 different flavours to choose from including 50 official flavours and a number of ‘rookie’ flavours, which are essentially new flavours that are introduced to test the market.
Although Jelly Bellys are sold around the world they are only available to buy in Australia from specialist confectionery retailers like Moo-Lolly-Bar.
All told we sell a lot of Jelly Bellys. Especially for weddings as part of a lolly buffet or also bombonieres.
Listed below is the 10 Most Popular Jelly Belly Flavours in Australia. It is not an official list by any means. However it is one that reflects sales in Australia from Moo-Lolly-Bar. Mainly from the number of people buying them, not to the actual amount bought.
