Jelly Belly Jelly Beans: Setting The Record Straight
It was the night before Christmas and all was quiet in the Moo-Lolly-Bar office. All our Christmas orders had been sent, the filing had been done and the table and desk had even been given a final once over with a cloth and broom. I was all ready to go. After all it was Christmas Eve. But there was still one thing left to do before I could feel justified in shutting down for the holidays. Check email one last time.
So I did. And there it was.
Sitting in my inbox was a message entitled ‘Jelly Belly’. Another enquiry, or so I thought. But then I opened it up and was completely surprised. The message was about the Jelly Belly brand of jelly beans, yes of course it was. But it was from The Jelly Belly Candy Company themselves! All the way from Fairfield, California.
Written, no less, by the Director of Communications, one Tomi Holt, who has been at the company in the PR function for 28 years, the email was essentially a reach out. Apparently they had seen my some of my Jelly Belly Jelly Beans blog posts and just wanted to convey their appreciation and offer future support. Which was very nice of them to do so.
The email did however, with the utmost respect, go on to inform me of some inaccuracies I had written about. Which I am happy to put right now. In one post ‘The Top 10 Most Popular Jelly Belly Flavours in Australia’ I made reference to the film ‘Candyman’. Apparently the film is not one that had any independent fact checking so anything it said should not necessarily be taken as gospel. In addition I wrongly credited David Klein as being the mastermind behind the creation of Jelly Bellys Jelly Beans. The person I should have credited instead was the company’s chairman, Herman G. Rowland, Sr.
About Jelly Belly Jelly Beans
A fourth generation candyman, all flavour breakthroughs, recipes and the flavour development for the proprietary formulas of Jelly Bellys have always been owned by The Jelly Belly Candy Company and produced under the personal guidance of Herman G. Rowland, Sr.
According to Tomi Holt ‘It has been his phenomenal insights and commitment to fine candy making that has brought this company and brand to where they are today’. As no new flavour is developed or introduced without first tapping in to his expertise, no story about Jelly Belly can really be right or authentic without giving him the credit he deserves.
It was after all his personal connection to the product’s most famous fan, President Ronald Reagan, that ended up bringing worldwide attention to Jelly Belly Jelly Beans brand.
No one else can, or should ever take credit for that. Now that I know this. I’ll certainly never give anyone else credit for it again for inventing Jelly Belly Jelly Beans.
