Why Aussies Love Lollies!
According to them, Aussies Love Lollies so much that over a four week period over 7.2 million of them eat some form of confectionery item. This includes lollies, toffees, caramels and eclairs.
That works out to about 39% of the entire population aged 14 years and older. The most popularly eaten product was Allen’s Snakes Alive. Which was enjoyed by 19% of the population. Fully five percent more than the The Natural Confectionery Company Jellies. Which were munched on by 14% of the population.
Interestingly these two products sit well ahead of the other brands in the top ten in terms of popularity. All of which have between 5% – 7% comsumption rates.
What is most fascinating is that the research highlights the motivation behind why Aussies Love Lollies.
It might surprise you to know there are some very common reasons. The most popular for 22% of people is that they were appealed by the thought of enjoying different tastes. As well as the textures and colours the product would bring.
While 19% of Australians said they simply wanted the feelgood experience of eating something that would make them happy.
Interestingly 17% ate lollies as a result of feeling bored and wanting something to nibble on. Especially to overcome a mundane task.
The research also discovered different reasons for eating different brands of sweets.
For example, 23% of those who ate Allen’s Snakes Alive, as opposed to 19% of those who consumed all other lollies and toffees, did so because they ‘wanted to indulge myself to make me feel happy’.
By contrast 16% of those who ate Mentos Fruit flavours, as opposed to 11% of everyone else did so because they ‘needed an energy boost and wanted to feel recharged and ready to go again’.
Consumers of Chupa Chups (28%) were more likely than others (22%) to be motivated by the desire ‘to enjoy the different tastes, textures and colours’. While 30% of those who ate Allen’s Fantales and 33% of those who had Skittles, as opposed to 17% of everyone else did so because they were ‘bored or wanted something to nibble on to help get me through a boring task’.
The findings of the research will no doubt perk the interest of manufacturers and advertisers alike.
As Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director at Roy Morgan Research, says ‘With the proliferation of different lollies available, marketers are under great pressure to make their product stand out from the crowd. Roy Morgan data gives powerful insights into what is driving consumers to their preferred brand and style of sweet’.
The research provides an opportunity as ‘these results open the way for marketers to more effectively promote to their target market by taking advantage of the triggers for their brands’ consumption. They could also inform new product development by allowing sweets producers to tailor new products to the reasons people eat them’.
These words will be music to the ears of many in the confectionery industry. As their whole business is contingent upon satisfying consumer demand.
