Fads Fun Sticks Candy
Launched in 1943 by Riviera Confectionery, Fads Fun Sticks Candy were a brand of musk flavoured candy modelled on a cigarette.
Made by the Victorian based company who also produced musk sticks, big boss cigars, white puffs, fruit sticks and colts foot rock, they took the form of thin white sticks with a red tip that was designed to resemble a fake lit end.
It even came in a box that was shaped like a cigarette packet.
In what is generally seen as a double dose of inappropriateness now, the candy was also called ‘Fags’.
Though this was in reference to the slang term for cigarette. As opposed to the more pejorative meaning it has today.
Regardless of what people may think of the original there is no disputing that it is an iconic Australian lolly.
About Fads Fun Sticks
Due to the growing feeling that the product may encourage children to take up smoking the candy was rebranded in the 1990s.
The name was changed to ‘Fads’ and the colour of the product was changed to yellow. The red tip was also removed completely and the packaging was redesigned too.
Shortly after the turn of the century the terms ‘Fun Sticks’ was added to the brand name. This was an attempt to further distance it from the connection with cigarettes.
Still made by Riviera Confectionery, a division of Fyna Foods, the Fads Fun Sticks Candy is now made in Colombia.
The ingredients listing for Fads Fun Sticks reads as sugar, corn starch, glucose syrup (corn), tapioca, gelatine (beef), natural colour (160a), flavour.
It is available to buy in a box of 48 sticks. Each one of which weighs 15g.
